These Fishermen Noticed Something Strange in the Distance, on Top of an Iceberg

There is something about fishing that bonds people together. Breathing in the fresh air on the open water is a great way to get connected to nature. One day, these three fishing partners headed out to fish, but they had no idea what they would eventually encounter.

Buying a boat

Mallory Harrigan, Cliff Russell, and Allan Russell have been fishing together for a long time. It all started with a passion, which led them to the decision to buy a boat together, which they would use to get out to their favorite fishing spots in Canada.

They were determined to follow their passion, and what began as a hobby eventually turned into a commercial fishing business. They bought their boat and never looked back.

Bonding experience

The three fishermen loved what they do for a living. Every single day, they would get up early and make their way to their boat. The job was hard and very trying. Even after long days on the water, and getting their bodies banged up with various bruises, they simply never complained.

They just loved fishing so much that they only focused on their love of the experience, rather than the difficulties that come with it. Their positive attitude and mutual respect of fishing helped their bond and friendship grow with time. But none of them could have expected what would happen one seemingly ordinary day.

Extraordinary day

On what appeared to be just another day out in the open sea, the three friends and fishers were about to experience something completely unexpected. For some reason, Mallory arrived at the boat extra early that morning, as she prepared the checklist of all the equipment they needed.

It is always essential to make sure everything is on the vessel and readily available, in order to avoid having to head back to shore in the middle of a fishing trip. Once all the tasks were completed, the trio was ready to go, and they made their way out to sea.

Setting sail

The three friends were finally ready to go. In reality, the preparations were relatively easy. They were highly experienced, and they knew exactly what to do. As they get everything ready, they typically tell jokes and have a great time together.

When all the equipment was in order, they began to set sail. One of their favorite spots to catch a crab was a location just a few miles off the coast of Canada. The waters were very calm that morning, and it was almost too quiet. There was a strange feeling in the air that something different would happen that day.

Dropping the lines

As they were making way to their desired fishing spot, they quickly reached their destination with little resistance from the calm seas. They arrived at their destination and turned off the engines. They were finally ready to cast their fishing lines. They knew this spot was always full of crabs, so they were excited to see what they would catch that day.

Even though the crab season was coming to a close, they had achieved great success in the preceding weeks, so they still had hopes of getting a good catch before the season officially ended. With such a positive attitude, good vibes were in the air.

The first catch

Once all the gear was placed in the perfect spot, they were ready to start fishing. One of them steered the boat, as the other two handled the lines of the cages, to make sure they won’t tangle.

They had the process mastered at this point, working together in harmony. It was finally time to check the cages, and they couldn’t have been happier. The cages were completely full, and they had their best results of the season.

A new spot

Now that the three-person crew finished with their first spot, they turned on the engines and started making way toward colder waters. They knew that the colder spots brought added dangers.

The scenery began to change and they began to pass several icebergs with seals on them. Birds were nowhere to be seen, and the temperatures were a lot colder. While it was a beautiful sight, they knew to be ready for the dangers that came with it.

Icy waters

The Labrador Sea is known for its cold temperatures. While the crew was familiar with the territory, mother nature is always unpredictable. Allan was responsible for looking for any dangers, including icebergs.

Suddenly, he noticed an iceberg with an unfamiliar animal resting on top. They could not recognize what the animal was. They initially thought it could have been a seal, but they couldn’t tell for sure. They moved in closer, while carefully maneuvering the boat as safely as possible.

Mystery animal

Mallory assumed that it was a seal sitting on top of the iceberg and Cliff agreed with her. But Allan continued to insist that the animal was moving differently than a seal. After all, they had seen many animals sitting on icebergs in the past, but this one seemed different.

As they drew closer, they looked through the binoculars, and everyone started to agree that it just didn’t seem like a seal. But what was this mystery animal?

Unplanned adventure

Everyone knew they needed to continue fishing, but they just couldn’t let go of this unsolved question. The animal appeared to be stranded, and their curiosity got the better of them.

As the boat pulled in closer to the iceberg, the winds rapidly picked up. As they got closer, they noticed that the animal was covered in fur.

Cautious approach

The group was definitely curious, but they knew they had to be careful. They approached the iceberg with extreme caution. While they had fished in the area many times, they typically stuck to the same routes, knowing they were safe.

Any deviation from these routes meant they were entering unknown waters that could be dangerous. But they felt they had to make sure the animal was safe, rather than potentially leaving it to die if it was stranded.

Moving slowly

All three friends were excited to share this adventure, but as they drew closer to the animal, the waves became higher and more dangerous. They moved the boat very slowly, always looking for any potential dangers.

Their biggest concern was floating chunks of ice that could damage their boat and put them all in danger. They worked together carefully and diligently.

Wind gusts

Suddenly, the wind got a lot more ferocious. The boat began to rock back and forth as the wind and waves shook the vessel. They began to think that the wind could frighten the animal, making it jump off the iceberg.

As they moved in closer, they still couldn’t see what it was, and the wind made things a lot more complicated. But they didn’t give up. They knew they were almost close enough to see which animal was sitting on the iceberg.

Moving target

The gusty winds and big waves made the iceberg move around. Now they had a moving target, which made things a lot more challenging. They began to speed up, in order to keep pace with the drifting iceberg, while also looking around at the surrounding waters to avoid any dangerous obstacles.

Even worse, after so many hours in the water, daylight would soon end, and they would find themselves in unfamiliar territory at night. They had to move fast.

Clearer picture

As the boat got closer, they could now see that the animal had four legs. Its shape was similar to that of a dog, but that made little sense considering where it was. It was now clear that the animal was wet and shivering from the cold.

Their conscience kicked in, and they decided they would try and save the animal at any cost. Even if it meant putting themselves in harm’s way.

Mystery revealed

Finally, the three friends were able to identify the animal. It was an Arctic fox. How it got stranded on an iceberg remained a mystery. But all they cared about was bringing the little guy to safety.

Aside from potentially freezing to death, there were big birds that began to circulate overhead. They knew that time was not on their side, and they began to formulate a plan to save the Arctic fox.

Risky Mission

The crew immediately began to create a rescue plan for the small Arctic fox. Many things were working against them, including time and the weather. They also had no idea if the fox would even trust humans with his own life.

They wanted to help, but they didn’t know if their plan would even work. It was the moment of truth. The time had come to execute, not knowing how things would end.

Course of action

The only way to get the fox off the iceberg would be to get it to come to them. They began to hold out their hands, hoping it would jump toward them. But it was afraid of the unknown people below trying to help.

With nowhere else to run, the fox simply stared at the three crew members on the boat with caution. Even though he wouldn’t jump toward them, they were determined to keep trying.

The wait and see approach

Cliff, Mallory, and Allan knew their options were limited. There was only so much they could do. Holding out hope that the fox would eventually trust them, they waited and continued trying to call it over to them.

Finally, the fox started to move towards them, likely realizing his options were limited. It was clear to see that the fox was scared of the three friends, not knowing what his fate would be in their hands, once on the boat.

Safely on the boat

As the boat got even closer to the iceberg, the fox tried to approach. Clearly, it was too weak to jump, so Allan reached out and picked up the little guy. He placed him on board, and they all quickly grabbed towels to dry it off and try to provide some warmth.

Still, this was a wild animal, and they had no idea if it would attack them. They proceeded with caution.

Sudden Escape

The fox was so scared that it decided to jump off the boat and into the freezing water below. It tried swimming back to the iceberg, but the crew didn’t give up. They followed the fox until it eventually ran out of energy, and Allan once again picked him up from the water and slowly placed the fox back on the boat.

The small animal hid in the corner of the boat, not knowing where he was and what to expect.

Warm conditions

The crew began to take action to make the fox more comfortable. They made a bed for it from a bin and filled it with sawdust for insulation and placed it in the sun. They then tried feeding it some fish and crab but to no avail.

Finally, Mallory offered the fox a sausage from the crew’s food supply, and he gladly ate the meal and fell asleep. Meanwhile, daylight was dwindling, and they had to make their way back to shore.

Freedom

The boat finally reached the shore, and the three friends needed to figure out what to do with the fox. Now that the fox was dry, fed, and well-rested, Mallory suggested a right spot near the docks to release the animal back into the wild.

As they reached the location, they watched the grateful fox make its way into the wilderness, getting a second and unexpected chance at life. It was the perfect end to an incredible adventure none of them will ever forget.
