If the isolated life of a lighthouse keeper doesn’t exactly appeal to you then you will be happy to know that the job also involves managing the small B&B Inn that attracts tourists to the island. If that still isn’t enough to get you sending in your resume, the job comes with a big fat paycheck of $ 130, 000 a year!
The East Brother Light House Station in San Rafael Bay has been lighting the way for mariners since 1874, but in the 1970s the government wanted to fully automate the site and remove the need for lighthouse keepers. Luckily this Victorian-era landmark was saved by preservationists and the lighthouse was partially automated and the living areas converted into a charming B&B.

Don’t let the dollar signs in your eyes cloud your vision, the islands B&B is no easy site to manage. The tiny B&B is isolated and only accessible by boat and the seas surrounding the island can be very choppy and foreboding. Once guests arrive keeping the site running falls on the shoulders of the lighthouse keepers.
There are two positions open on the island and at least one of the applicants needs to have a captain’s license from the US Coast Guard. The job responsibilities include transporting guests to and from the island, providing meals and housekeeping for guests, collect all the supplies for the island and keeping the site clean.
According to the present lighthouse keepers, winter months are quiet as most guests come in the summer months. According to the mayor of nearby Richmond, his office has already received thousands of applicants for the position.
