Margaret’s Father Became King
In 1936, King Edward VIII was forced to abdicate the throne when he chose to marry a divorced American woman. Margaret’s father was the obvious choice to take the title of king.Then-named Prince Albert, Margaret’s father was hesitant about this.
There was some talk of his younger brother Prince George taking the throne since he had a son. But it was soon settled that Prince Albert would become King George VI.
