Pics That Will Have You Doing A Double Take

They say that every picture is worth a thousand words, and for these funny pictures that is certainly true. While at first glance they may look quite outrageous, it’s only when you take a closer look that they finally make sense. Optical illusions have been boggling our minds since we were children and we’ve got some of the best, most mind-bending illusions right here but can you work them out?

Keep scrolling to see some hilariously strange pictures that will have you entertained.

Reflect on This

Is that the star-spangled banner? Why, yes it is! While this may look like a bizarre magic trick, if you look carefully you can see that the backward flag on the table is actually being reflected by the liquid in the wine glass.

Surprisingly the glass is reflecting the flag outside the window. As the angle of the sunlight changed the flag was eventually reflected on the living room wall. How cool is that!

Shepard’s Tables

Are these tables the same shape and size?

Another tricky one, but we’re almost positive that you decided that the two tables are completely different, and yet (you’re probably getting the gist) they are not. Published in phycologist Roger Shepard’s book, Mind Sight in 1990, this is an image that will prove our vision system is mostly influenced by our experiences, rather than reality. The Rapture

Wow, there really is a lot going on in this picture. At first, it almost looks like the rapture has finally happened and people are being taken up into heaven. Or maybe even a giant tractor beam from a spacecraft above is abducting some poor, unsuspecting person.

The imagination can run wild in these cases. Sadly though this is nothing more than a strip of light being reflected into the inside of the car windshield.

Hiding In Plain Sight

Now, this is quite a trippy picture and you may need to squint to make sense of it. This image was created by makeup artist Dain Yoon who is renowned for her mind-blowing illusions. Can you spot her yet?

Well, before posing for this picture Dian painted the background all over her face and neck. When she stood perfectly still for the camera she disappeared into the background. It was only once she opened her eyes that people could finally spot her in the picture.

Circles

Are the orange circles the same size?

If you said the circle on the right looks bigger, then you will be thinking along the line of most people, however, just as they were incorrect, so are you. Optical illusions play with your perception of reality, and what one person may see, another may not. Learning that it is what we do with the visual information, not what we see, is the key to understanding.

The Sand Bear

Don’t look now but it looks like a giant sand bear is charging down that dune. It’s so convincing we wouldn’t blame you for confusing it for a CGI effect for the next Mummy movie.

But in actual fact, this is what it looks like when your inexperienced friend tries to sand ski down a massive dune. Not far from the top the friend wiped out and the resulting collision created this bear-shaped dust cloud.

Life is For the Birds

This picture was taken by someone sitting inside a car and it has a strange explanation. At first glance this may look like this is a picture of a flock of white birds or a plague of locusts flying outside this car. For some of you, it may look as if the windows of this car are covered in cracks and chips from some kind of freak hailstorm.

But don’t be fooled, its actually a pretty cool weather phenomenon. During the cold winter night moisture must have settled on this car’s windows and as the temperature dropped the water froze into hundreds of little icicles on the glass.

Troxler Effect

Stare at the image, focusing on the center and draw attention to it for a few moments without blinking.

As you continued to stare at the image, it should have appeared as if it began to fade away. This is called the Troxler Effect, and it was discovered in 1804 by physician Ignaz Paul Vital Troxler. Here, the neurons in your nervous system stop responding to stimuli.

Follow a Different Path

Ok, so you may look at this picture and think you are looking at an ordinary path in a local park. With the leaves covering the ground it would be easy to make that mistake. In fact, one jogger did make this mistake and snapped this picture to share with friends.

While out for a run they decided to run on what they thought was a path, only to discover it was a creek with autumn leaves floating on the surface of the water. They must have had quite a shock when they stepped on what they thought was solid ground only to find it was water.

Chewie

At first glance, this looks like a smiling group of friends posing for a picture with someone dressed as Chewbacca from Star Wars. However, that is not even close to what is going on here.

If you look carefully, you can see that it’s just a group of friends taking a picture in a restaurant while a waitress stands behind them. What looks like a Chewie mask is actually the poor woman’s hair! Now that’s embarrassing!

The Mighty Pegasus

Is it just us or does this show pony look like he has been for quite a paint job? Well, it’s actually just this horse’s hair! The horse’s groom figured out that if the horse’s hair was shaved, the hair closer to the root was far lighter than the hair at the tip.

So they decided to shave most of this poor horse hair off to create this amazing illusion. Looks pretty cool.

A Turtle and His Noble Steed

This is one of those cool pictures that doesn’t really look real. At first glance, it seems like something out of photoshop instead of real life.

But this is a real picture of a green turtle riding on the back of a Gharial. Gharials are a type of crocodile that normally prey on turtles and other fish. But here these two seem to be the best of friends…at least for now.

The Poggendorff Illusion

Before looking at the image on the right, place your hand over it and look at the picture on the left. Is the black line leading on from the red or blue line?

Created by German physicist Johann Poggendorff in 1860, the illusion shows how our brains see geometric shapes and depths. In fact, the black line is lined up with the red line and not the blue as it may seem.

Ships Ahoy

Imagine relaxing on the beach and then seeing something like this. While this perfect snap looks like a pirate ship is floating by this popular beach, its actually just an optical illusion. What looks like a massive ship is actually just a tiny kite.

The angle of the picture just makes the kite look like a real pirate ship. Either this photographer has some incredible skills or he got really lucky with this perfectly timed snap.

Dragon’s Eggs

Scrolling through your phone you could easily confuse this picture for an image of an actual dragon egg. With its strange markings and egg-like shape, it does look like something off the set of Game of Thrones.

In reality, however, nothing could be further from the truth. This realistic looking dragons egg is actually just an avocado pit photographed close up. Hard to believe something so innocent could look so gnarly.

Kanizsa’s Triangle

Stare at the object, what do you see?

The most prominent thing people see in this illusion is the triangle in the center, and yet, the triangle does not exist. It was Italian psychologist Gaetano Kanizsa that made people familiar with this illusion to show that we rarely depend on sensory input.

A Sleepy Town

These buildings look more than a little suspicious. In fact, they look like they are alive and unimpressed or just really sleepy. With their weirdly shaped attic windows, these buildings really do look like they are secretly judging you from afar.

But in reality, it’s just a strange architectural design of all the buildings in this unique village. Imagine how odd it must be living in a village where all the buildings look like people.

A Two-Headed Beast

With all that fur it’s no wonder people are confused by this funny snap. So what exactly is it you are looking at? Well, this is no fantastical beast with two heads. It is actually just a pair of anteaters walking side by side.

What makes it look so weird is that the anteater closest to the camera has his head down and this makes it look like just one animal.

A Squirrel as Big as a Car

If someone sent you this picture you would immediately be shocked by how massive that squirrel is. But this is no giant car-sized squirrel, its just a simple camera trick.

This pint-size little mammal is actually sitting on the roof with the car off in the distance. The closer object just looks bigger than the other object that is farther away. So no need to panic, this isn’t a case of a Squirrelzilla attacking your town.

Impossible Trident

How many prongs appear in this image?

First noticed in 1965, in “Mad Magazine” a piece of graphic art, this is another illusion that gained popularity. Also referred to as the Devil’s Fork, lines are created to make one image appeared as if it should have a different beginning and end.

The Predator

Look at the image. Can you see a predator?

This image shows that even though sometimes, all the information is there, we cannot see it, and, in that case, we need a little help. Did you find it? The brain’s perception of color shows usefulness instead of accuracy. What to know where the predator is? Take a look at the next image.

Man’s Best Friend

We’ve heard of mystical Greek creatures with human bodies and animal heads but this dog/man hybrid is a first. Taking a quick glance at this funny pick will have your mind a flutter. While it looks like this man has a dog’s head, it is actually just a man hugging his favorite pooch.

The dog’s head is blocking his owner’s head and that’s why it looks so strange. At least we hope that’s what’s happening here.

She’s Floating on Sunshine

This little girl really knows how to strike the perfect pose and her execution was perfect. This snap was taken at precisely the right moment and it looks as if this little darling is floating happily above the water.

The Predator Revealed

Take a look at this image, and now, take a moment and take another look and the previous picture, now do you see it?

A Ghostly Apparition

This looks like something out of a Harry Potter movie. If you look carefully, it is almost as if a tiny evil spirit is escaping from this mug of hot coffee.

With his ghostly hands outstretched and his fist clenched he definitely looks like he is making a break for it. But this is no ghoul, ghost, or long-dead wizard. Instead, it’s just a really weird shape the steam made as it floated upwards.

Strange Shadows

See that man over there setting up the camera? Well doesn’t it look like he has a dog-shaped shadow that is being cast on the rock wall? Now that is pretty freaky.

But that is just the shadow of a golden retriever standing by to watch the broadcast. Strangely though while the dog’s shadow appears on the wall, the man’s shadow is still nowhere to be seen. Now that is strange!

Adelson’s Checker Shadow Illusion

Look at A and B, what do you think? Are they the same?

This is one of the most famous optical illusion, with people being baffled by this since it was released into the public realm. The question is, are the squares marked A and B the same shade? A high percentage of people would say no, however, they are indeed the same color. Despite it being a sunny day, this little cloud looks like it has some weight to it. So much so that it can bend this metal fence.

All Arms

We can’t stop laughing at this picture and we won’t lie, it took us a second to figure it out. By the looks of it, it seems like this baby has a massive hand while his dad has a tiny baby arm.

Chubb Illusion

What shape do you see first?

Discovered by Charles Chubb in the late 1980s, this experiment was initiated when Chubb and his team wanted to see how contrast would be perceived on different backgrounds. Here, when the textured object is on a plain background, it has much more contrast, rather than the other way around. This is called “imperfect transmittance”.

Finding Momo

If you blink you might miss what this picture is hiding. This winter snap may look just like a normal picture of snow-covered ground. But this picture has something more to share. If you focus carefully, you should be able to spot Momo the dog hiding in plain sight.

I’m Batman

While out on a cruise just off the coast of Greenland, this group of adventurers happened across the most unusual of icebergs. It seems that the ice had melted away perfectly to create this batman sculpture. Imagine being the person who took this funny picture.

One minute you are in the middle of nature and the next thing you know you are looking at a perfect sculpture of the Dark Night. The strange iceberg is so easily noticeable that the locals simply named it ‘The Batman’. Sadly it didn’t last, and a week later the iceberg drifted south towards warmer waters.
