The bathroom is one of those places that nearly everyone uses on a daily basis and its design has pretty much been perfected by this point. However, there are always those who insist on being different and creating their own unique designs. We honestly cannot understand what these people were thinking when they thought up these horrific bathroom design ideas. These design flops are sure to confuse anyone who has to use the facilities. Scroll down for some of the craziest bathroom designs that will have you laughing.
A long way down
Do you have a fear of heights? Then you might not be a massive fan of this bathroom. Not only did someone think it was a great idea to put the room above a chasm, but they also figured it was worth having a see-through floor too.
Who doesn’t want to picture themselves plunging to a grisly fate when they brush their teeth in the morning? Hopefully, this floor is more reinforced than it looks.
Out of reach
Toilet paper is one of those things that most people rely on when they go to the bathroom. That’s why these rooms are typically designed so that this essential is easy to grab. Usually, the toilet roll holder is within arms reach, so it’s right there whenever you need it.
However, this cruel designer thought it would be a great idea to put it as far away as possible. Unless your arms can stretch several feet, you won’t have any luck grabbing the paper when you’re on the toilet. Clearly, this person enjoys seeing others suffer in their time of need.
Too close for comfort
When it comes to public restrooms, there are usually design differences between male and female facilities. Obviously, the most notable of these changes is the presence of urinals in the men’s room. However, they’re generally not set up in this way.
We wonder if a woman designed this because any man who’s ever used a urinal would know what’s wrong with this positioning. Talk about being too close for comfort! If two guys used these urinals at the same time, a lot of personal space would get invaded. That’s something that plenty of men would not be comfortable with.
Your audience is waiting
The last time we checked, going to the toilet was something you do in private. It’s a very intimate act and one that most people wouldn’t want to do while others are around. However, the designer of this bathroom is apparently either a voyeur or an exhibitionist.
They figured that people who used this toilet would want an audience, so they put it somewhere filled with a load of chairs. It looks like they’ve just dumped the bowl in a room for council meetings or something similar. Do you have to sit on the toilet if you want to speak?
Through the window
If we were tasked with designing a public restroom, privacy would be the first thing we focused on. After all, when most people feel too exposed to the toilet, they don’t bother using it. Unfortunately, this designer thought privacy wasn’t high up on the list of requirements.
That’s why they put a toilet in front of a door with a window. We really hope that there’s a stall in there that we just can’t see.
Challenge accepted
Going to the toilet shouldn’t be a challenge. You use the bathroom for such essential bodily functions that things should always be as easy as possible. Sadly, this designer doesn’t seem to agree.
They believe that people need to earn the right to relieve themselves, which is why they set the bowl on top of several steps. Can you imagine trying to use this bathroom in the middle of the night or after a few drinks? Accidents would occur.
Staircase bath
There is nothing quite like a long bath at the end of a hard day and if one thing is for certain, it is that this time is when you want to have complete privacy and be able to do nothing but relax, away from the noise and people asking things of you.
For these people who couldn’t fit a bath in their en-suite, they decided to add it somewhere else. With a small area at the top of a staircase, they thought to add a bath right there. We are sure in the beginning it sounded great but this seems this the unsafest thing ever!
Flower Power
Judging by this picture you may be thinking this is the bathroom at a botanical garden or a garden center, but unfortunately this is the public bathroom in a mall.
Whoever ordered these custom made urinals didnt mind the extreme cost and were determined to have a flower theme for the men’s room. While they are definitely pretty to look at, they are difficult to clean and don’t really fit in a men’s restroom. What’s worse is they are almost too pretty to use.
Escape Detection
You need to have lightning-fast reflexes to use this public sink. You see the trouble is that the minute you open the tap, the motion sensor for the paper towel dispenser is set off.
In the end all you end up with a wet towel and wet hands. We can’t decide if the person who installed this didnt think it through properly or if they did this on purpose knowing how frustrated people would be.
Peeking under the stall
What is it with these designers thinking people want an audience when they go to the toilet? Admittedly, this one isn’t too bad, but it’s still a little unnerving to have all these people around when you’re on the porcelain throne.
It looks as though they’re peeking under the stall and cheering you on, something that we find a little unsettling. If people did this in real life, you’d probably be mortified. Thankfully, this is just a poorly-positioned ad, although what it’s for we don’t know. Surely there are better places to advertise something than on the floor of a public restroom.
Poor positioning
People really don’t seem to understand how urinal positioning works. These things should always be placed on the same wall with a reasonable gap between each one. While a urinal might not be the most private thing to use, men still don’t want their personal space to be invaded.
We’re not even sure what compelled this designer to set that middle urinal on a different wall to the others. Why did they put it on the partition?
No peeking
The whole point of stalls is to give people privacy when using a public restroom. Unfortunately, this design completely goes against that. Anyone who walks into this restroom could easily peek into the stall and see what someone was up to on the other side.
The person on the toilet couldn’t stop them because there’s no way of covering up the gap between the partitions. Perhaps it’s best just to hold it in until you’re home.
A simple mistake
Plenty of people have put someone’s toothbrush in the toilet as a prank. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a practical joker who was responsible for doing this. No, it was the toilet itself. Whoever designed it didn’t realize the downside of combining it into one unit with the sink.
All someone had to do was accidentally knock their toothbrush off, and their fate was sealed. Rather than falling on the floor, it went straight into the toilet bowl
.
Open wide
Now once you hear the story of this toilet seat you may think its a great idea, but in reality, this mom didnt quite think it through.
You see when this mom wanted to remind her young son to lift the toilet seat before using the toilet, she decided to print up a mouth and face and stick it to the underside of the toilet seat. That way when he saw the face he was reminded to lift the seat. It all went well until her daughter needed to use the toilet.
Hidden away
If you’re a guest at this person’s house, your first experience with the bathroom might not be a pleasant one. Imagine going to use the toilet only to realize there’s no paper around. It’s not that the roll has run out; there isn’t even one, to begin with!
After panicking about what to do, you eventually cave in and call out for help. That’s when you get told that the toilet paper is in the cupboard under the sink.
There’s only room for one
We must admit that we’re scratching our heads at this one. It looks like the toilet and urinal are having a stand-off, and we can understand why. Both serve essential purposes, but only one ever needs to be used at a time.
Unless, of course, this bathroom is designed to be used by two people at once. Who would want to sit on the toilet and stare at someone’s backside while they used the urinal though?
Mind your step
While it may look as if this toilet sits on the edge of a vortex or giant spout but in reality its actually an optical illusion. The linoleum tile has a 3D design that makes it looks like the floor leads to a pit.
This is a clever idea but unfortunately, this is the public toilet in a local pub. Each night drunk patrons exit the bathroom in terror because they think there is a gaping hole in the bathroom floor. This is a perfect example of a great idea and poor execution.
Watching you go
Anyone that found those people peeking under the stall uncomfortable would probably be equally put off by this. As great as Jeremy Renner is in the Avengers films, we don’t think many people want him watching them use the urinal.
This definitely wasn’t the best place to advertise the Age of Ultron, especially when there isn’t even any mention of the film. All it is is a picture of Hawkeye with his eyes directly on the urinal.
A broken reflection
Not everyone who uses public restrooms does so because they need the toilet. Some people find the mirrors over the sink helpful for touching up their makeup or checking themselves over. Of course, to do that, you actually need to be able to see your reflection.
This designer apparently has a complete disregard for anyone who uses the restroom solely for their vanity. Good luck applying that new coat of lipstick when this is the mirror at your disposal.
Staying dry
How often have you washed your hands in a public restroom only to find there are no paper towels left? With no dryers around either, you’re forced to wipe your hands on your pants and leave a mark.
Thankfully, that never happens in this restroom, although this designer definitely went a little overboard. There appear to be more dispensers here than there are sinks, and they’re all placed at random heights too. What was the thought process behind this?
Ladies first
Now, this may look like a funky design for a men’s urinal, but it is actually a unisex urinal in a German public bathroom.
These unique urinals which can be used by both men and woman were installed to save money. Understandably no women wanted to use something like this and as a result, they haven’t really caught on anywhere else. We imagine women everywhere are rejoicing.
Solve the puzzle
It’s safe to say that the designer of this bathroom got a little overwhelmed when it came to the sink. Apparently, putting in a faucet was a lot of pressure for them, and they ended up going overboard.
We have no idea how all these switches and faucets connect, and we imagine anyone who uses this bathroom gets frustrated trying to work it out. Washing your hands is supposed to be quick and easy – this is just torture.
A tight squeeze
When your bathroom is small, it can be a challenge trying to fit everything in. You need to cram in a sink, toilet, and either a bath or shower, but doing that is easier said than done. Sometimes you have to make compromises, something we think this designer was forced to do.
After all, why else would they place this toilet in such an inconvenient position? Anyone who wants to wash has to climb over it awkwardly.
Something tastes funny
We can’t say we’ve seen many public restrooms that feature a drinking fountain. Perhaps that’s because people have been designing them like this. While we’re sure the water is perfectly safe to drink, this set up doesn’t fill us with much confidence.
We’d prefer it if the pipe wasn’t going to the same place as those urinals. Just seeing this is enough to put us off using the fountain, even if the water isn’t tainted.
Not accessible for all
There’s something incredibly cruel about this design. We really hope that the person responsible for this didn’t do it intentionally because otherwise, that would make them heartless. The whole point of a disabled restroom is that it’s easily accessible for those who require additional needs.
Many people who use them are in a wheelchair, which means getting up a step isn’t in the realm of possibility. Did no-one think about putting a ramp in when they did this?
For the couple who cannot bear to part
This monstrosity is called a lovers seat and it was designed for use by couples. Here the toilets are attached and they can be used simultaneously. The toilets are also attached to the bathtub and at the back, there are two joined sinks attached.
If you ask us this is to close for comfort and there are some barriers couples should not cross. Plus it is super weird having two toilets at the edge of your bathtub.
Hazard risk
We’ve lost count of how many times we’ve been told to be responsible around electricity. When you’re a child, it’s drummed into you again and again because of the potential dangers. Unfortunately, the designer of this restroom apparently forgot about everything they were taught when they were younger.
Drying your hands right next to an electrical outlet doesn’t seem like the smartest idea to us. All that water is bound to do something eventually, right?
Tiny spaces
>Now, this is no place for someone who is claustrophobic! This long room is more or less the exact width of a toilet and what about walking to the toilet, we’re not even sure if someone could walk straight to it or if they would need to side shuffle with their backs against the wall.
For us, this is just a huge, huge no-no, a toilet in a small space is the last place anyone would want to be. Give us a nice big bathroom with lots of toilet space any day.
To the right, to the right
This might not be a bathroom design error but it is certainly a problem. Chandeliers are always the center point of a room, dropping high from the ceiling and adding an extravagant element to any room.
Often, the light would come from a certain point on the ceiling and one that has been designed specifically to hang a light fitting. Now, we’re not sure what happened here but the builder was way off when he hung this shade. Just a little (or a lot) the right and he would have been correct.
No to carpet
A carpet can always warm any cold room and to be able to feel the carpet under your feet and definitely a nice feeling. A known design rule is that someone shouldn’t put carpet in their bathroom, this is widely suggested due to hygiene reasons as well as the fact there is a lot of water in a bathroom.
It can be very hard to dry out a carpet and it can even let off a stench sometimes. Anyway, for these homeowners, they went a million steps too far and decorated their whole bathroom with carpet.
Selling point
Is it a bath? Yes. Is it a four-poster bed? Well, perhaps yes as well. This homeowner wanted a unique selling piece in their house and they had the idea to combine both a bath and a four-poster bed, to create that “luxurious” atmosphere.
We have to say we don’t agree with that too much. With the carpet stretched up to the side of the bath and camouflaged into the floor and then the odd posts, we’re not sure how many people with see this unique space and something they would like in their own home.
What room is it?
Back in the day, a lot of rooms in a house, due to overcrowding, were designed to have multiple uses and here’s a great example. A bedroom that is also a bathroom maybe, but to combine both a dining room as well as a bathroom, this is something that just doesn’t seem to go together.
I think we can all say you don’t want to be eating anywhere near to where someone is using the toilet, whether you are family or not.
Something for everyone
We can understand making public restrooms suitable for all ages, because kids, adults, and senior citizens alike use these facilities. However, if you’re going to make something accessible for one age group, make sure that the other people are covered too.
Otherwise, you’re just catering to one audience while leaving the rest high and dry. Case and point, this sink right there. It’s probably great to use if you have small hands, but it’s useless if you don’t.
The wrong audience
It’s not uncommon to find advertisements in a public restroom. After all, these facilities receive so much attention so often that an ad is bound to get noticed. However, if you’re going to use the restrooms this way, you should probably make sure that you’re dealing with the right audience.
For instance, it’s no good putting up an advertisement with the words, “Thinking of becoming a mum?” in the men’s room. That doesn’t cater to anyone using those facilities.
Making a mess
The designers of this restroom probably thought they were being funny when they installed this toilet seat. We’re going to assume this is the men’s room given guys have a reputation for sometimes missing the bowl when they relieve themselves.
However, when the seat looks wet anyway, how are you supposed to tell if you’ve made a mess yourself? Surely it will just blend in with the design, making it worse for whoever comes in after them.
