Best Venetian Islands to Visit

Venice is world-renowned as one of the most beautiful and romantic cities, but the city itself is a little more complicated than people think. The city is made up of various small islands that are separated by canals and linked by bridges, while Venice proper can be found on one island, there are many other sites to see on the other islands that tourists often miss. Here is a list of the best Venetian islands to visit for that authentic Venetian experience.
Torcello Island
Unlike the more popular Murano and Burano islands, the quiet island of Torcello is quiet and more sparsely inhabited. It’s the perfect location if you want to get away from the crowds and enjoy a peaceful day out and a great lunch. While the island was once a bustling place, its silty waters made it less navigable than the other islands and fewer people settled there. The island is the site of the impressive basilica of Santa Maria which is a beautiful, historic church to visit. If you are hungry make sure to eat at the renowned Locanda Cipriani while on the island.
Murano island

This is close to the northern shore of Venice proper and while it’s not as large as the main island it does still have its own history and excitements. This island is the home of Venetian glassmaking and glassworks cater to supplying glass art to tourists. While on the island you can take a walk around town and admire the medieval architecture, or you can visit the museum of glass blowing or see real-life glass blowing as the master’s work in their workshops. When you get tired of everything glass then you can take a tour of the church of Santa Maria e San Donato and admire its fine Italian architecture.
Burano
The island of Burano is famous for its colorful painted houses that line the peaceful canal.
