Boy Saves His Mom's Life After a Bear Breaks into Their Family Home

Boy Saves His Mom’s Life After a Bear Breaks into Their Family Home

When you go for a walk in the woods, you expect to see some wildlife. Maybe you will see a squirrel or the occasional bear. If you go camping, you can expect to see even more. You will always want to be mindful of keeping your food out of your tent or high up in a tree. Encountering wildlife can be absolutely terrifying. If you have watched the film The Revenant with Leonardo DiCaprio, then you know just how dangerous bears can be. For two boys, they found themselves in a very unusual situation. They knew that they would have to make a quick decision if they were going to survive a face down with one of nature’s most dangerous predators.

Meet The Boys

It was a warm August evening, and teenage boys Hayes Sherman and Bobby Harden decided to stay in and catch up on some television. The two teens loved bingeing television series together, and with the weather being so hot, they did not want to be outside.

It seemed like a regular evening in 2019 until something started to make some noise. The two boys thought it was odd, and continued to watch television, figuring whatever it was would stop.

A Beeping Noise

Refrigerators nowadays have a lot of fancy mechanisms built-in to them. The fridge in Hayes’ home would begin to beep if the doors were not closed. This was a handy mechanism as it meant that anyone who heard it could quickly rush to close it.

You don’t want to let the cold air out, because then the entire fridge will defrost. Hayes thought that his mom was making something for dinner and had left the door open while she got things ready. When the beeping continued for a few minutes, though, Hayes decided it was time to investigate. What was going on in there?

Checking The Time

Hayes and Bobby had not looked at the time in quite a while. They had both been absorbed by what they were watching. Glancing at the clock, Bobby realized that it was half-past midnight. Hayes’ mom would not be making dinner at this time of night.

If Hayes’ mom wasn’t in the kitchen, then who was? The two teens looked at each other, and a sense of unease fell over them. Both of the boys began working up the courage to see what was going on. After discussing who should enter first, they both began to creep towards the beeping fridge.

A Banging Sound

Before the boys could even make it to the kitchen, some new sounds began emanating from it. Instead of the beep of the fridge, they could hear plastic tupperware and pots and pans being tossed around.

The loud clanging was even more alarming than the sounds of the fridge. It was at this point that the teens realized it must be an intruder. Someone had entered Hayes’ home and was not being quiet about it. They would have to confront the intruder and try and scare them off. Hayes did not want his house to be robbed.

Peekaboo

Slowly, the boys crept towards the source of the noise. There were no lights on in the kitchen, which made the whole situation even scarier. Both of the teens imagined seeing a ghost, or some other kind of monster.

Instead, what greeted them was far scarier and more real than any monster they could have imagined. The kitchen had a glass door that the boys were able to look through. The view through that door is one that they will never forget. Hayes had to make a snap decision about what they should do next. Bobby helped him decide what to do.

The Bear

Wandering around the kitchen, nosing cupboards open, and throwing Tupperware around was a giant bear. This bear was not like the ones they had seen in the wild. It looked like it was starving and would eat anything, including the teens.

Both teens slowly crept towards the glass door to lock it. They did not want this bear getting out of the kitchen and rampaging through Hayes’ home. Once the door was locked, though, the two boys scrambled to think of what to do next.

Watching In Horror

The teens continued to stare through the glass door, as the bear scavenged through all of the food in the kitchen. It managed to hook its claws through the handle on the door and pry it open. Once it had access to the fridge, it was like having access to a buffet.

The bear found some ground beef, ice cream, and even some crackers. He quickly gobbled everything down and continued to look for more food. The bear seemed very angry but all the boys wanted to do was protect the mom.

New Smells

The bear quickly got tired of looking for food in the kitchen. It had eaten everything it could find. That is when it began to sniff the air. It had smelled Hayes and Bobby. It slowly began to lumber over to the glass door the teens were hiding behind.

It tried to open the door, but the teens were holding it firmly closed. That’s when the bear became agitated. It saw the boys as a possible source of food or entertainment.

Quick Thinking

The teens were safe in their glass-doored room, but the rest of the house was now open to the bear. It could begin prowling around the first floor, and even up the stairs to the second floor where the rest of Hayes’ family was fast asleep.

Neither of the boys had their smartphones on them. There was one thing that they could use, though. Hayes was not sure if it would work, but it was all they had at their disposal.

Sleeping Family

The bear only seemed to be getting more aggravated and the boys felt as though they were losing control of the situation. How would they get access to their family sleeping upstairs?

They couldn’t scream as it would probably cause the bear to go on a rampage but at the same time, could they really sit there behind the glass door and allow to bear to potentially attack the family.

A Handy Device

In the age of technology, you no longer need a phone on hand to make a call. If you have a smart device like an Apple watch, all you need to do is make sure that it is paired with your device.

Then, you can simply place a call and speak to the device. He had never used this function before, nor did he know how to.

Running out

With little to no time, the boys panicked and then Hayes looked down at his wrist, remembering he had decided to wear his watch that day, and knew how to contact his sleeping family. But it wasn’t as easy as that.

Would the watch really help him to alert his family, would this piece of technology enable him to save their lives?

The Warning

Once Hayes placed the call, and his mom picked up, he was able to convey the seriousness of the situation. He told his mom that a bear had entered the house looking for food, and was now prowling around the first floor of their home.

His mom remained calm as she listened. Hayes’ mother needed to decide what to do. She was relatively safe upstairs as long as she, and his sibling stayed behind closed doors.

Emergency Services

Now that Hayes had access to a phone, and his family had been warned, he knew who to call next. Very quietly, Hayes dialed 9-1-1 and explained the situation to the dispatcher. The bear was still trying to get through the glass door where the boys were.

He did not want to aggravate it any more than it appeared to be. He spoke very quietly to the dispatcher and hoped she understood what he was saying.

Hanging Out

This bear decided that he liked his new home, and eventually stopped trying to get into the room where the boys were. That meant it was time to explore the rest of the house. As the bear wandered between the rooms, the boys watched.

Whenever the bear smelled anything remotely tasty, he would chomp down on it. That meant a lot of the furniture now bore some very obvious teeth and claw marks.

A Mother’s Fear

Bobby and Hayes were relatively safe, but that did not stop Hayes’ mother from being worried. As soon as she woke up to her phone ringing, she knew that something was not right. Susan Mohun had to listen in her bedroom to this giant bear rummaging around her home.

She could not help but be scared for the boys’ safety. She could not get to them to help them, even if she wanted to. The bear was exactly in-between them.

The Police Arrive

Just as Susan was becoming more worried about her boys, her son told her he saw a red light. The boys slowly moved away from the door and looked out the window. The police had arrived and were stealthily moving around the property.

The police were assessing the situation, and how best to get the bear out of the house, and the family to safety. It would take some finesse to get everybody away from the bear..

Mom To The Rescue

Susan had seen the police on the driveway. She began to motion to them. The police looked up, and she shouted the layout of the house to them, along with where the exits are. The teens were happy that help had finally arrived, but they were still concerned about what damage the bear might do if it felt threatened.

Everyone hoped that the bear was full from its kitchen raid, and would be ready to run out one of the doors when it was opened.

Meet Allyson Prero

The sheriff sent in their Deputy, Allyson Prero. She was known for getting any job given to her done. A bear was nothing compared to some of the criminals she had to deal with in the past.

Once she found out the location of the bear in the house, she located the closest door and kicked it with all of her might. The door burst open, and the bear lept out of the house. This was when things got scary once more.

Hanging Out

Instead of running off into the woods, like everyone had expected the bear too, it stopped in the driveway. It was not reacting to human presence as most animals do. It began to wander up slowly and down the driveway, as the police stayed back in their vehicles.

Bear rounds are one of the most effective ways to get a bear moving. Allyson fired one of those at it, and it immediately bounded off.

Saved By The Police

Hayes and Bobby had watched all of this happen from behind the glass door. With the bear safely out of the house, the boys and Hayes’ mom were free to leave their hiding places. Deputy Sheriff Alysson was waiting for them with open arms.

She knew how scared everyone had been, and she did not want them to be afraid anymore. Both the teens agreed it was time to learn some basic bear safety after this encounter.

The Garage Door

At first, Hayes and his mom were confused about how the bear had managed to get inside the house. It quickly became apparent that someone had neglected to shut the garage door that evening.

The bear had entered the garage, opened the inner door to the house, and made its way to the kitchen. From now on, Hayes will always make sure to close that door to avoid any bear-y encounters. He definitely does not want this to happen again.

Breaking And Entering

If you thought that this was a one-off, then you will be surprised to know that bear break and enters are very common in the Lake Tahoe region of the United States. At least 15 breaking and entering incidents involving bears happen each year.

These wily creatures follow the smells of barbecue and other good things to people’s backyards. From there, they find ways to get inside homes and gain access to the kitchens.

Fences Don’t Always Protect You

This particular wildlife encounter was more uncommon than most because the house is not situated right next to the woods. Hayes’ home is in a gated community, which has been designed to keep wildlife from entering.

As we have seen, though, no gates or doors can keep this bear out! You should always be mindful of locking your doors and windows, like bears and other wildlife like cougars, can easily get inside homes through these.

Bear Safety

Now that the entire family is safe, they have been able to take a crash course in bear safety. They’ve always had some exposure to wildlife, but after this, they definitely wanted some less hands-on experience. Allyson was able to explain some basic safety things to them.

The teens have also watched some nature shows and read some books on how to stay safe from wildlife. No one was hurt, and everyone learned the importance of keeping their doors locked!
