However, there’s a thin line between a concerned bride and a “bridezilla,” and this bridesmaid feels as though her bride has crossed right over into the realm of diva demands.

Yet, one bald bridesmaid can’t help but wonder if her bride is taking her demands to the next level by asking her to wear a wig.

A lot of work

Although the bride plans her wedding, the bridesmaids also have to put in a lot of work. They need to be on-hand to ensure that the bride isn’t running out of steam, they need to ensure that the guests are all prepped and ready for the day, and they need to do whatever the bride wants them to.

It’s a full-time job during the run-up to the wedding, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not enjoyable. Many women love to do whatever they can to ensure their friend has the most wonderful day. However, this can often come at a cost.

Looking the same

That’s because brides often expect their bridesmaids to all look the same. This means that bridesmaids have to buy the same dresses and look uniform – even if that’s not their style. It’s the job of these women to lift up the bride, without outshining them with their dresses and their overall aesthetic.

Normally, these women all get ready on the morning of the wedding to make sure this happens without a hitch. They all get dressed together, they all do their makeup together, and they all take photos together as one bridal unit. In theory, it works a treat.

A difficult task

However, making your bridesmaids look like one beautiful unit can be difficult when women look so different. While some brides embrace these differences and allow their bridesmaids more freedom in terms of their appearance and their overall look on the day, there are many others who are stuck in their ways.

They become set on the idea of their bridesmaids looking identical, so they do not allow anyone to stray from this plan. This can often cause difficulties and problems when women who look different attempt to keep to their own aesthetic for their own personal reasons.

Bald by choice

One Reddit user had been bald by choice for many years before her friend asked her to be her bridesmaid. Because of this, she just assumed that her look would be accepted by the woman who knew her well. Instead, she was surprised when the bride took her wedding planning one step further and asked her bridesmaid to wear a wig on her wedding day.

The bridesmaid couldn’t understand why her friend would ask her to do such a thing, and so took to Reddit to ask for some advice. She wanted to know whether she or the bride was being unreasonable.

A religious upbringing

To help the Reddit community come to a better conclusion, the bridesmaid decided to give some background information on her situation. She noted that she had come from a strict and religious upbringing, where she wasn’t allowed to cut her hair.

She was not allowed to cut her hair at any point in her childhood, which meant that it grew to immense lengths over the course of her early life.

Moving away

By the time she was 18 years old, her hair was down to her knees, and she couldn’t bear it. Before too long, she had escaped her old life and moved away. She wanted to leave that stage of her existence behind her, so she made the conscious effort to also leave her hair behind her.

So, she cut all of her hair off and embraced a new look that showcased her new life.

Shaving it off

Since then, the bridesmaid has always had short hair. While she is not always bald, she flits between having a pixie cut or a buzz cut throughout the year. Then, when the summer months come along, she shaves her hair off completely and embraces the bald look to ensure that she stays nice and cool.

While she does this to forget the past, she also does this because she can’t stand long hair.

A lot of maintenance

One of the main reasons for this is because long hair requires a huge amount of maintenance. Not only do you have to wash it, but you also have to brush it and detangle it, and she doesn’t want to have to deal with this.

In her eyes, long hair is just too much hassle, and that’s before you introduce the bad memories and feelings she attaches to these long locks.

Pretty stubborn

While the bridesmaid acknowledges the fact that she’s been pretty stubborn over her hair issue over the years, her friends have accepted her look. They have always known her as the friend with the short hair, and they have never known her to look any different.

Because of this, the bridesmaid assumed that her friends loved her appearance and her bald appearance. She soon realized this wasn’t the case when her friend got engaged.

Asking a big question

When the bridesmaid learned that her friend had got engaged, she was over the moon. She was incredibly happy to see that she had found the love of her life, and she was even happier to learn that her friend wanted her to be a bridesmaid.

When the bride-to-be asked her a big question, the Reddit user didn’t have to think about her answer. Yes, she would be her bridesmaid!

Staying calm

As the friendship group relished in the big news, they were happy to see that the bride-to-be remained relatively calm about the whole wedding planning process. Everything seemed to be coming together well, and the bridesmaid was happy to see that her friend had not turned into a bridezilla.

However, in mid-2019, the bridesmaid realized that her friend had been meaning to ask her something else for a while. This was when the drama began.

Wanting them to match

Three weeks before the bridesmaid posted her story on Reddit, she had received a request from the bride-to-be. To ensure that the bridesmaids all matched on the day and looked as uniform as possible, she wanted her bald bridesmaid to wear a wig.

The Reddit user knew immediately that she wasn’t happy with this request, and so she told her friend that she didn’t want to comply with her demand.

On bad terms

Since then, the two friends have been on bad terms. They have not spoken, and the altercation has caused discomfort within their friendship group. While the bridesmaid felt as though the bride was being unreasonable, she was being made to feel as though she was the bad guy by not adhering to the bride’s demands.

The bridesmaid was incredibly confused and upset. Was being bald really that unattractive and unacceptable for the wedding?

Taking sides

To make matters worse, the Reddit user noted that the other bridesmaid had taken the bride’s side. They felt as though she was being unreasonable, and that she would only have to wear a wig for one day.

In their eyes, it was a simple request that shouldn’t have been such an issue. However, the bald bridesmaid didn’t feel as though it was just a wig. It was so much more than that.

IComing at a price

Not only would this wig change the appearance she had embraced over the years, but it would also come at a financial price. If the bridesmaid wanted a realistic and high-quality wig that the bride would be happy with, she would have to shell out a fortune for it.

This would be on top of the bridesmaid dress, shoes, makeup, and plane tickets that she had already bought to attend the wedding.

Costing a fortune

The wedding had already cost the bridesmaid a fortune, and she didn’t see why she had to pay even more to buy something she didn’t want to wear. She would never wear the wig again because she was happy with her bald look – so why was that financial burden being thrust upon her?

When approached about paying for the wig herself, the bride said no. This left the bridesmaid in a rather sticky situation.

Facing warm weather

There were so many reasons why the bridesmaid didn’t want to wear a wig to her friend’s wedding, and the weather was just another added extra. The wedding would take place on a plantation in Louisiana in August 2019, which meant that the weather would be extremely hot.

The bridesmaid loved her short hair in the summer months, and couldn’t imagine anything worse than wearing a wig in hot temperatures.

The principle

However, that was the only thing that upset the bridesmaid. She felt as though the basic principle of the request was demeaning and rude. In her eyes, the notion of wearing a wig implies that her bald appearance isn’t attractive and that she looks bad because she doesn’t have long hair like the rest of the bridesmaids.

If that was the case, then the bride’s balding father would have to wear a toupee.

All about her

While the bridesmaid understands that the wedding will be all about the bride, she doesn’t feel as though she should change her appearance for the sake of one day. Her friend knew that she was bald and they had accepted her for that years ago, so why was it suddenly becoming such an issue?

After all, if she didn’t want a bald bridesmaid, she shouldn’t have asked the Reddit user to begin with.

Offering an alternative

Of course, the bridesmaid didn’t just outright refuse to wear a wig. While she didn’t want to shell out for an expensive weave, she did offer a couple of alternatives. She asked the bride whether she could wear a pretty headscarf to cover her bald head, and even offered to grow out her hair into a pixie cut.

However, the bride wasn’t having any of it and told her that she needed to wear a wig.

Asking the internet

The bridesmaid was at a loss, so decided to ask the internet what they thought about the matter. There were many people who agreed with the bride and noted that the bridesmaid should just go along with it.

After all, it was just one day, so what did it matter? They told the bridesmaid that she would want her own wedding day to be perfect, so asking a small request wasn’t worth ruining a friendship over.

A large majority

However, the large majority of people noted that she shouldn’t be forced to wear a wig. They confessed that the bride wasn’t a very good friend if she was asking such a thing of her bridesmaid and that the bridesmaid should refuse to comply or bow out of the wedding party altogether.
