Captain Marvel: The details that fans missed

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been many people’s alternate universe thanks to the long list of films that allow us to explore worlds beyond our own. The beginning of this epic saga is 2008’s Iron Man and has continued through the much anticipated Avengers: Endgame. The cult following around these films are a true testament to their creative greatness and the epic storylines that got us all hooked from the very beginning.

While we will not give away spoilers from the new film, we did go on a deep dive into the missed details that viewers missed in Captain Marvel. The backstory of Carol Danvers, which was the inspiration for Captain Marvel, gives a lot of context and much-needed information that helps piece together the character development through the last film in the saga. Each and every Marvel Cinematic Universe film is connected to the other and their storylines converge in the final movie. This is the end of an era, but we are sure to watch and rewatch these films many times over (and over and over).

The reasoning behind Stan Lee’s appearance

Prior to Stan Lee’s sad passing in November 2018, he was able to make his final cameo appearances in both Captain and the final Avengers film. Stan Lee was the creator of Marvel Entertainment and has had a cameo in his films for years.

The cool thing about his cameo in Captain Marvel is that he is reciting lines from Mallrats, a film he also had a cameo in back in the 90s. It’s Stan Lee inception!

Is it Fury or a Skrull

In Captain Marvel, Nick Fury meets with Carol Danvers in a pub. There, the two work together to fight the Skrulls. The Skrulls are known as spare shifters and can take on any form they like. As a result of their abilities, Carol asks Fury a question that only the real Nick would know the answer to.

The little piece of information is that Nick will not eat a piece of toast if it is cut diagonally. However, in the film Age of Ultron, Nick seems to be eating toast diagonally, leading fans to think that it is a Skrull and not Nick.

90s references galore

Carol’s story takes place in the 90s, which means that we get to relive that epic decade alongside her. In Captain Marvel, we get to enjoy 90s classics like the music – 90s grunge being the personal favorite for that one, the 90s references like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Carol’s Nine Inch Nails shirt.

Also her use of an old school large computer screen which she uses to search for something on AltaVista, which would never fly these days with our love of Google. The 90s references are throwing it back in the best way possible and making us also glad we survived it.

The last Blockbuster

In the film, Carol crashes into a Blockbuster video store, remember those? Well, this store was not a part of the film’s set, but rather the last store of its kind in the world. The film’s creators wanted to make everything as authentic as possible so it was their mission to find this store.

Now, the store gets fans arriving at its doors to complete their Marvel fandom. The last branch of Blockbuster also has a Twitter account that seems to be the one to follow these days, milking their presence on the big screen for all they can.

Goose the Flerken

Remember the adorable cat that Carol and Nick meet? Well then, you must remember then that he is not actually a cat but an alien species called a Flerken. Goose looks as adorable as can be, which is part of his deceptive nature. He actually has several purple tentacles and can seriously harm people with just the smallest little scratch.

What you may not know is that Goose’s name was inspired by Top Gun seeing as Anthony Edwards’ role had the very same code word. He was also a pilot, just like Carol. We love these little behind the scenes tidbits.

Soda slurping

Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury is one of the most important roles throughout the Marvel films. The producers and directors wanted to honor his acting chops with a scene that represents Samuel’s Pulp Fiction character and soda slurping scene.

The scene in question in the Marvel film is when Talos is slurping his way through a soda, just like Samuel’s character did. One iconic film giving another one a nod, all is right with the world.

Foreshadowing

When Carol crashed onto earth and that aforementioned Blockbuster video branch, she looked around and found a copy of the film The Right Stuff. Like many things in the movie, this was meant to have more meaning to it as the movie she picked up was about American pilots who fly to space.

This foreshadowing was a hint at Carol’s past as a pilot herself. Everything has a meaning in this movie, take nothing for granted.

The Tesseract connection

Captain Marvel’s timeline takes place prior to the other Marvel films as it is in the 90s. However, while due to certain jumps in time, there are references throughout the movies that link to others.

A perfect example would be when in The Avengers, Banner asks Fury if he wants him to ingest the Tesseract in order to protect the world. In Captain Marvel, that is to the last detail what Flerken does, this mean Banner knew this had happened.

Trust issues

What made Nick Fury lose his eye? It was a scratch from none other than Flerken in the 90s, as shown in Captain Marvel. Initially, Nick thought it was a little scratch when it would become far more serious.

This all connects to another movie, Captain America: Winter Soldier, where Fury tells the Captain that the last time he trusted someone it resulted in him losing his eye. Pretty sure no one thought that he meant the Flerken.

PEGASUS

Project PEGASUS is a topic talked about in several Marvel films. The project deals in the investigation into the Tesseract. In the film Captain Marvel, the character of Dr. Lawson works on this very project and in harnessing the power of the Tesseract.

If you recall, in Iron Man 2, Stark asks Jarvis if he could open the file on the project, which his own father was also working on. The Tesseract got around in these films.

Wakanda link

Prior to realizing that Skrulls were in fact not the bad guy, they had made Torfa their home planet. Looking to the comic itself, Torfa is said to have toxic air quality due to the amount of Vibranium that is on the planet.

A fan made the assertion that the meteor that strikes Wakanda could be from Torfa as it is the very precious metal that makes Wakanda the way it is in terms of it advancements.

Korath

Actor Djimon Hounsou has played two different roles in the superhero genre. He played the role of Korath the Pursuer, as well as in the film Guardians of the Galaxy (the bad guy who tries to remove the Power Stone from Quill’s grasp).

In Captain Marvel, we are meeting a younger version of Korath and get a lot more information as to his development into the powerful Starforce member that he is. So much context being given!

Shooting star

This is more of a theory than a hidden detail, but in Captain Marvel, when Monica and Carol see a shooting star, there are those who think that the shooting star was in fact none other than Peter Quill.

Shooting star

The timeline actually makes this pretty plausible as they saw the shooting star in 1988, within the six-year timeframe that Carol was missing for. This has not been confirmed but there are many of these theories out there.

Glowing

We all know better than to think that there is no hidden meaning in the words the characters say. Just such an event took place when in the film when Maria tells her daughter Monica that if she figures out how to glow like her aunt then she might be able to go to space.

Little did she know that Monica will indeed get to glowing thanks to her electromagnetic powers. Next time someone thinks they outsmarted her, they will know better.

Emotional line

During the powerful line when Carol tells Yon-Rogg that her name is Carol, you can see that she is emotional and even has a tear running down her face. That very tear is there entirely on purpose.

The scene was filmed many times over but it was Brie Larson who thought that the tear made it that much more powerful and strong, rather than show weakness. It was for that reason that Brie decided to make emotions her statement.

Kree discrepancy

The Kree are meant to have blue skin. While we know Carol does not have it because she is in fact human, Yon-Rogg is said to be full Kree yet still does not have blue skin. The reason for this discrepancy is said to be as a result of mixed mating on behalf of the Kree people and resulted in pink-skinned Kree.

Kree discrepancy

This was lucky for Carol considering she would have easily been noticed for lack of blue tone.

Color changes

When images from the set of the film emerged prior to the films release, fans of the Marvel Universe were shocked to see that Captain Marvel’s suit was green, and not the trademark red, white and blue.

The reason for the color change was because we went back in time when her suit was green and white and before she knew that she was in fact kidnapped by the Kree. White and green were the Kre colors in the comic books.

Powers

Carol gains her powers when she absorbs the power core prior to being kidnapped by the Kree. It was then that Carol also discovered that Yon-Rogg killed Mar-Vell. The comic books have a similar storyline, where Yon-Rogg and Mar-Vell fight to the death.

It was in this storyline that Carol absorbs the power of the machine named the Psyche-Magnitron that was a Kree invention. Both stories end with Carol gaining her powers from a machine.

Vers

When Carol was a Kree and a part of them (prior to knowing her kidnapping) she is called Vers by those around her. Later on in the film we all learn that her real name is Carol Danvers – Vers for short. In the film, she has a necklace that is broken and only has the end of it left – Vers.

She had no idea what it stood for until she discovered her real background and how she got to Kree.

Avengers: Endgame scene

During the post-credits scene of Captain Marvel, there is a scene from Avengers: Endgame. Now that the film is out perhaps we will learn the truth but we wonder if this scene happened or not.

The scene shows the Avengers attempting to have the pager Nick Fury used to contact Carol work again, only to have Carol show up at that moment. This would be an epic scene should it actually take place in the new film.

Redhead

In the scene where Carol runs after Skrull in the subway station, her attention is ever so briefly taken up by a redheaded woman. Again, every detail in this film matters and this one is no exception.

Redhead

The woman she looks at is none other than Kelly Sue DeConnick, renowned comic book author and the brains behind the Carol Danvers that ends up being Captain Marvel herself. Stan Lee was not the only one to have a cameo appearance!

Different ending

The original ending was showing Carol flying into space with no explanation of who, what, where or when. However, actress Brie Larson thought that that did not make sense for the character who would not do something unwarranted. Carol needed a reason to leave the planet she had just discovered is her home. Helping Talos and his loved ones find their own place was just the sense of purpose that Carol needed to give her proper reason to part with earth.

Bunker

Like many other elements, the bunker where Project Pegasus is held is shown in yet another Marvel film. The bunker was also shown in The Avengers. The bunker is eerily similar to the one where Loki goes into to take the Tesseract for himself.

This is all too fitting since Project Pegasus is the very project lead to find out everything about the Tesseract and was also the place where the Space Stone was held and later taken by Thanos.
