Unique canned goods that are popular around the world

These Disgusting Canned Foods Really Do Exist

For anyone who has spent a lot of time camping or living in remote destinations then they are probably very well acquainted with canned food. Some countries have some truly unique ones which we have to admit sound pretty gross to eat. That being said, there are some ‘normal’ canned goods that we would be less than inclined to eat, no matter how long they are going to last in all their canned glory. Canned food has its place though, it stays edible for years and canned peaches are absolutely delicious. Keep reading to see if you would eat any of these very special canned foods.

Corn Smut

Not only does this not look appetizing but actually, the name is totally gross as well. This canned Huitlacoche is, in fact, a Mexican specialty and is a dish that is made from the fungus that grows on the corn vegetable.

Known also as ‘Corn Smut’ the word huitlacoche translates to ‘hibernating excrement’. Sounds delicious right? Any want to join us from some corn smut? Come on, you know you want to.

Silkworms

Canned Korean street food can now be found in many supermarkets, and if you have been to Seoul before, then these will certainly remind you of a common scent you would have smelled whilst traveling around.

This is one of the most popular snacks in amongst Koreans. Full of protein, you can open this can and tuck into these silkworms. Preserved in water. Hard on the outside, once you take a bite of them you will taste their mushy insides.

Fermented Fsih

In Northern Sweden, you can find this can of fish in any of the supermarkets and although the fish in itself is far from fresh, the can actually looks like it is an old as time!

The contents taste and smells like rotten fish and is in fact, Baltic Sea herring that has been fermented. Yuk!! Fresh from the sea it may have once been, but this isn’t something the company can stand by for much longer.

What Is That?

Campbell’s is well known for its tinned soups and as their tag line says, ‘Soup that eats like a meal’. But we’re not sure how healthy steak in a can is, after all, imagine all the chemicals that need to go into this to preserve it.

Other than that, this customer came across something totally gross when he seemed to find a piece of cartilage. Excuse us why we hurl!

Burger In A Can

Who doesn’t enjoy eating a good cheeseburger? The patty is cooked to perfection and the bun is nice and fresh. Apparently, cheeseburgers can come in cans and for the true cheeseburger connoisseur, you may just be willing to give this unique take on the classic a try.

We have to admit it definitely does not look as appetizing as we imagined once it had been removed from it’s can. We really hope whoever ate this did not get sick.

Possum Perfection

For those that have spent a fair amount of time in the Southern United States then you have probably seen your fair share of possums. These little guys are nocturnal and often enjoy hanging out inside houses and sleeping. Unbeknownst to most people, possum meat is also something that can be eaten.

The company producing this delicacy definitely tried to make it more appetizing by including sweet potatoes and gravy but we’re not sure if that will actually cover up the taste of possum. You’ll just have to give it a try and find out for yourself, hopefully it tastes like stew once it is heated.

Not Exactly Pork And Beans

Pork and beans is a pretty standard dish and if you’re very hungry it can make for a pretty delicious breakfast. Pork brains with milk gravy is definitely a different take on what most of us are used to. It seems like this brand tried to make their ‘delicacy’ appear more appetizing by showing a picture of the brains amongst what looks like mashed potatoes.

We’re not sure what a good accompanying dish would be but it seems like mashed potatoes are not it. The rose is also perhaps not the best choice of symbols for this brand. A cartoon pig would have been better because we doubt this smells like roses.

A Roll Of Bread

There are few things as scrumptious as the smell of fresh bread baking. It wafts through the house and makes everyone’s mouth water as they wait for that first thick slab slathered in butter. Canned brown bread definitely does not have the same mouth-watering allure.

What we are a bit confused about is how this bread was squeezed into a can. Was it baked in the can, or simply squeezed in by a machine to give it that roll like shape? Honestly, this could be okay depending on how you slice it. The question is whether a thick slab or a thin slab would be better?

No Teeth Please

Canned fish is extremely popular, specifically canned tuna, salmon, clams, mussels, and the list goes on. Herring has been very popular in parts of Europe and Scandinavia for a long time but we’re pretty sure when you select a can of herring that teeth are not supposed to be included.

This can looks like somebody accidentally included some crocodile meat, jaw and all. You can eat crocodile meat so maybe this is considered a meat medley which could make for some interesting eating. Just be careful to pick the teeth out of your meal to avoid any toothy situations.

A Glass Of Gelly Grass

Beverages in a can are pretty normal. Who doesn’t enjoy a nice glass of soda on a hot day? What makes this one special is that it is a drink made of grass but not just any grass, grass that has been turned into a gelly form.

This isn’t your typical grass though, it comes from the same family but it has been boiled until it’s formed a Jello like substance that is semi-drinkable and something you can eat with a spoon.

Funny names

Founded in 1869, the Heinz Company has pretty much stayed on top of all canned goods across the market in both the states and the United Kingdom. They have created some bizarre combinations in the last 150 years and even once made a can of chocolate sauce with baked beans.

Here, they decided to have a little fun with the words on their tins, after all, they’ve been around long enough that they can get away with it! Look closely at the words, you’ll certainly find them funny.

Gummy Gizzards

In some countries, the gizzard is considered a very fine cut of meat and only high ranking family members are given the honor of eating it. That being said, in a lot of other countries the gizzard is not considered the part of poultry that most people want to eat first.

It seems like most companies think the addition of cream to a strange part of an animal makes it automatically tastier and more appealing.

An Engineering Marvel

Roast chicken is one of the most delicious meals you can have. The skin is crisped to perfection, maybe it is stuffed with bread and berries, and with an accompanying gravy, it is something to delectable not to eat.

However, an entire chicken in a can, absolutely cannot possibly taste the same, even if it is heated up. What we’re curious about is how a chicken, bones and all, was squeezed inside this tiny can.

An All In One

Haggis is a beloved delicacy in Scotland which features a lot of different types and cuts of meat being stuffed inside each other. For those that don’t have the time to make their own haggis some food companies have taken it upon themselves to introduce a canned version for quick consumption.

It didn’t sound too great before it was canned and the canned version honestly looks like a pate or some kind of meat jelly.

Road Kill In A Can

Turnpike Quality may be referring to this particular brand of armadillo, but it sounds a lot more like this armadillo was the victim of a fast-moving vehicle. This found it being turned into canned meat. Once more the addition of cream has been used to try and class up this not so classy delicacy.

The picture itself shows the armadillo in question with carrion on it which makes us a little bit queasy about who or what may have tasted the armadillo before it was canned.

The Taste Of Nest

Bird’s nest soup is a delicacy in China and while it sounds like it could be okay in theory, albeit a bit on the crunchy and feathery side we’re not so sure we want to drink it. What gives bird’s nest soup such a unique flavor is the fact that birds called swifts, produce a lot of salivae when making their nests and the saliva is what you are tasting.

This means that this is essentially a can of bird saliva. The real question is how does the saliva give you energy?

The All-American

Hot dogs and America seem to go hand in hand. If you attend almost any sporting event be it baseball or soccer, hot dogs are usually on sale which makes them an all American treat. That must be why one company decided boiling hot dogs was too difficult and a canned version of the treat was necessary.

What we are curious about is whether or not the hot dogs come inside buns or if you need to get those yourself.

A Snail Snack

Escargot has long been a French delicacy. Snails are roasted with garlic and butter to create a delicious medley of flavors but canning them seems a bit counterintuitive. You are supposed to eat snails when they are fresh and warming up ones that have been sitting in a can seems like it could be a recipe for disaster.

Or at the very least a slimy surprise. Maybe these little guys are still in their shells, buy a can and find out for yourself!

Tongue In Cheek

Cow tongue is a pretty popular dish as it can be cooked until it is quite tender and spiced well. Sheep tongue is a less common dish and from the look of this can sheep tongues are quite big and dark.

The picture on the can makes it look like sheep tongue is the same as a nice steak. Maybe if it is fresh it is, but this one looks like it would just be a weird gelatinous blob of meat.

A Reindeer Recipe

Scandinavia, specifically Finland which is where Santa’s home Lapland is rumored to be is a haven for reindeer. This does not mean that they are only flying through the sky hoping to deliver presents though. Reindeer meat has long been prized as a key ingredient in nourishing stews and in pate form.

Spreading it on crackers and toasted bread makes it a pretty common canned food to be found. Just try not to let the can’s reminder that you are eating one of Rudolph’s family members turn you off.

Not So Alive Larva

Insects have long been considered a good source of protein and many countries in Asia and Africa consider larva a delicious snack when it is in season. Silkworm larva when fried up or in this instance canned with barbecue sauce might not be everyone’s cup of tea but you might find you like these little guys.

Their somewhat juicy texture makes them an okay snack but the picture on the can makes it look more like a bug trap than a delicacy.

Pure Fat

In this day and age, most people are trying to lead healthier lives by cooking with olive oil or coconut oil. There is a lot less fat in these than say cooking with pure lard. For this person, they decided that duck fat might be just the thing to cook up their favorite meals in.

Duck meat itself is delicious but the fat produced is pure grease just like when you cook bacon. This person may want to use this fat a bit sparingly.

Breakfast Anytime, Anywhere

Everyone has lazy days where they just want to wake up late and eat an easy breakfast when they are ready. Enter the canned breakfast which contains everything you never knew you wanted, such as mystery meat, mushrooms, and beans all cooked in a special mystery sauce.

Whoever opts to eat this and not quickly fry up some eggs is truly a lazy person because this definitely does not look like it would even taste like breakfast.

Snake Please

For those that live in the desert or snake-infested areas than rattlesnake may just be your meat of choice. Rattlesnake looks like rather bony meat which is not really something humans should be eating.

Imagine having to pull bones out of every piece of meat as you attempt to sample some rattler. It would seem like this snake should have been left peacefully in the Rocky Mountains, rather than canned by them.

Sandwich Time

Peanut butter and jam sandwiches are something that most children and adults like to indulge in from time to time. It is very easy to grab a couple of slices of bread and slap on some jam and peanut butter.

For those that don’t want to go that far but crave a PBJ sandwich, there is now a canned variety. It looks like it is made with sub bread which might be a bit strange but it is pretty hard to mess up this classic.

Smokey Scorpions

If you head to the food markets in Southeast Asia than scorpions will feature pretty prominently. Usually, they are roasted on sticks for easy eating not canned. These smokey flavored scorpions will either be very crunchy or maybe their shells will have softened after being suspended in brine.

The big question is what happens to the scorpion venom when they are canned, nobody wants to experience an accidental poisoning. This delicacy just seems a tad on the dangerous side.

Mac And Cheese

Mac and cheese is the comfort food most people love to curl up with on a cold day. Its creamy cheesy goodness warms the soul and makes any problems fade to the background. However, canned mac and cheese is a bit of a different story.

At least shell out for some Kraft Dinner if you find yourself craving some soul food. Canned cheese sauce can never be as good as the real thing.

Kraft

Speaking of Kraft, although this isn’t a can we couldn’t believe it when we saw this bottle of macaroni and cheese! Known throughout the Us and in Canada, ‘mac n cheese’ is one of the most popular dishes in both countries.

However, despite the claim of ‘The Cheesiest’ we’re just not sure how we feel about mac n cheese in a bottle. We’d rather stick to it in a can!

Endless Insects

Last but not least, we come to our final canned products that may make you cringe or go ‘yum.’ Canned insects from grasshoppers to ants seem like a delicacy that the world simply cannot get enough of.

This list has shown that there are many different canned foods that you may just have to try if you have an adventurous palate. Or you may just want to make sure all the food you cook is fresh from now on.
