If you’re dreaming of white sandy beaches, jungle hikes, and lush vegetation then Saint Lucia might just be the island for you. Found in the West Indies region of the Caribbean, Saint Lucia has long been a haven for travelers looking to relax on the beach. What makes Saint Lucia unique to some of the other islands in the region are what are known as the Pitons. What exactly are the Pitons though?
The Pitons
Saint Lucia is known for the two active volcanoes that makeup the skyline of the island. Petit Piton and Gros Piton are connected via Piton Mitan ridge. Petit means small in French, and Gros means large, which is how the two volcanoes can be told apart. These volcanoes, and the lush jungle around them makes for some pretty exciting outdoor activities.
The Drive-In Volcano
Drive-in movies have become pretty popular over the last few months, but Saint Lucia has something even better – a drive-in volcano. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to drive into the crater of a volcano, and feel the wafts of hot steam coming out of it, then you have to visit. You will want to make sure it is safe to do this, before driving into the crater. All the tourism companies on the island will be able to assist you. This is not the best spot for taking pictures of the Pitons, but you will get to experience what it is like to walk or drive through an active volcano.
Soak In The Sulphur Springs
The smell of sulphur can be a little overpowering, as it smells like rotten eggs. However, the sulphur springs on Saint Lucia are said to contain many elements vital to health. The sulfur springs have been turned into a tourist destination, and there are separate pools for you and your fellow travelers to relax in. After relaxing in the pools for a bit of time, you may want to indulge in a mud treatment. Some of the pools have a natural volcanic mud in them, which you can soak in. This mud has been said to help with certain skin conditions, like eczema. After bathing in the springs, and the mud, you can rinse off under a waterfall.
Hiking Around The Pitons
A trip to Saint Lucia would not be complete without doing a hike around the Pitons. The Tet Paul Nature Trail is a scenic 45-minute hike that allows you to take in the majestic peaks of Petit Piton and Gros Piton. There are viewpoints along the way that you can stop at and take pictures from. You will definitely want to grab a couple of cool shots for your social media.
