Mother Got the Shock of Her Life When She Snuck into Her Daughter's Dorm Room

There is nothing quite like the bond between a mother and her daughter. For one mom, she and her daughter were inseparable. As her daughter neared the end of high school, she knew that she would set off on a new adventure: college. It was going to be hard for this mom to say goodbye to her daughter, and only see her on rare weekends and holidays but this mom decided to surprise her daughter. It didn’t take her long to regret the decision.

Meet The Mom And Daughter

McKenna and Deanna Pilling hail from New York. McKenna loved growing up there. She and her mom often spent time outside, or in the city seeing shows, and going on special mother-daughter bonding trips.

That’s why it was very difficult for Deanna when McKenna announced that she would be heading to Utah for university. She felt that Utah State University was the perfect school for her, even if it was almost on the other side of the country.

Heading To Utah

As soon as her high school graduation was over, McKenna began to prepare herself for Utah. Deanna decided to make the journey to the state with McKenna to help her unpack and get her room organized.

After all, this would be the first time she had ever moved out. McKenna needed to feel supported, as she embarked on the next chapter of her young adult life. It would be about four months before these two would see each other again. McKenna would stay in Utah until Christmas, which would be hard for both mother and daughter, but Deanna had a plan.

A Surprise

Deanna knew that she would need to see her daughter before the end of summer next year. After the Christmas holidays, it would be too long of a stretch to not see her daughter. That’s why she decided to do something special. She would fly to Utah a day or two before McKenna was scheduled to depart for New York.

The time they would have together could be spent packing up McKenna’s dorm room, and catching up on everything that had been going on in Mckenna’s life. Deanna was going to let her visit be a surprise for McKenna, though. She would have no idea that Deanna was coming.

A Day Trip

McKenna’s dad knew that her mom had a surprise for her, but he stayed quiet as he knew she would be thrilled to see her. Deanna eagerly waited for the day to arrive when she would be able to hop on a plane and see McKenna.

The two talked on the phone almost every day, but it was not the same as actually sitting down together, and being able to hug her. Deanna just hoped that this would be a happy surprise for McKenna. She knew her daughter was growing up, but they had always shared a close relationship. A few months could not have changed this.

A Possible Twist

As it was McKenna’s last day and night at college until the following term, Deanna realized that she might not actually want to spend that time with her dear old mom. It was possible that she had not shared every aspect of her college life with Deanna, and thus, she might have plans to go out with her new friends, or even a new boyfriend.

At this point, Deanna began to worry that maybe she was making a mistake. Would McKenna even want to see her? She quickly rang McKenna to see how she was getting on, but as the phone went to voicemail, and all the passengers on her flight began to board, Deannna had to make a decision.

At The University

Meanwhile, McKenna had no idea her mother was about to surprise her at school. Deanna had finally touched down and began making her way over to the campus. Her first stop would be to McKenna’s dorm room to let herself inside, and get ready for her surprise.

She remembered the number and had a key from when McKenna had been home over the holidays. She had a few of her favorite things with her and wanted to help her pack.

An Incoming Call

Right before Deanna reached the campus, she heard her phone start buzzing. As she checked the caller ID, she saw that it was McKenna finally responding to her call six hours after she had made it.

Deanna was already in Utah, and she did not want McKenna to find out before she could get set-up to surprise her. She made the executive decision to ignore the call and simply talk to her daughter in person.

Getting Lost

The Utah State University campus is a sprawling one that covers a vast green space in between some beautiful mountains. This is by no means a problem, but when you are a mom from out of state, it means that finding things can be a bit difficult, especially a dorm room if you have only been on the campus once.

Deanna had to find campus information to find McKenna’s dormitory. They were very helpful and pointed her in the right direction.

A Busy Time

As this was the last day of college for all of the students, the campus was very busy. Everyone’s families had come to help them get packed, which was a good sign for Deanna. She figured that McKenna would be very happy to have some help, like her fellow students.

Deanna just hoped that McKenna wasn’t one of the many faces rushing by, who would recognize her before she was ready. All of the students rushing around was a bit disorienting for Deanna.

Keeping A Low Profile

At this point, Deanna was feeling a bit lost again. She refused to give up and call McKenna to come and help her though. This needed to be a fun surprise, not her mom getting lost and needing help. There was one thing that Deanna had not tried yet.

She furtively looked around for any of the students that she knew McKenna spent a lot of time with. They all lived in the same dorm, and would hopefully wander back to it. Then, she could follow them.

Hours Later

Searching for McKenna’s dorm room, turned into a real pursuit. Deanna wandered around the 450-acre campus for hours trying to find the right residence. Finally, after all of this time, Deanna thought she had made it to the right one.

There were a few students mingling outside of the building, and they were girls that she had seen McKenna with on social media before. She had finally found the building!

Knock, Knock

Deanna breathed a big sigh of relief, entered the building, and began to look for the room that belonged to McKenna. She had written the number down, and felt that this was finally going to be the easy part. After finding the room, she gave a cursory knock, expecting McKenna to be inside.

Silence greeted her. That in itself was not odd, but Deanna was a bit confused that McKenna was not getting ready to come home like the other students.

Rethinking Her Plan

Deanna had really believed she would knock on the door, it would open, and she could yell, “Surprise.” Unfortunately, things were not going according to plan. That was okay though, Deanna would simply let herself inside the room, and surprise McKenna in a different way.

The only thing she needed was the key to the door, and she was not sure that she had a copy. Maybe someone would be able to help her with this.

An Unlocked Door

Before asking someone for a key, Deanna decided to try the door handle, and see if it was open. Shockingly enough, it was! McKenna had left the door unlocked, which was convenient for Deanna, but also not that safe. She would need to discuss that with her daughter.

Opening the door, she headed into the room and was greeted by a sight she had not expected to see. Maybe this surprise had been a bad idea.

Empty

As soon as Deanna entered the two-bedroom apartment, she saw that it was not empty. One of the bedrooms had some teenagers hanging out, listening to music, and getting ready to head home. That meant that the other room was McKenna’s.

However, it had already been packed, and there was no McKenna inside. That was odd; where was she? Deanna sat down on the bed and decided it was time to message McKenna back.

Very Clean

This dorm room was nothing like McKenna’s bedroom back in New York. She was always clean, but never this tidy or organized. Deanna wondered what else had changed during her daughter’s time here. She hoped that it had been a positive experience, as going to college can be tough for some young adults.

The bed looked very inviting to Deanna, who had been on the go, and flown across several states. Maybe she should have a quick lie down before surprising McKenna..

Taking A Nap

Checking her phone, Deanna looked to see if McKenna had messaged her. Nothing had come through yet, and the bed was the only piece of furniture in the room. Deanna knew that she needed to rest for a few minutes, or exhaustion was going to get the better of her.

She hoped McKenna would not be too scared to see her mom fast asleep in her bed. After getting comfortable, Deanna had another idea.

A Quick Snap

Before she fell asleep completely, Deanna decided to do something that would give away the surprise. She did not want McKenna to find her mom asleep in her bed, so she took out her phone and prepared for a funny selfie.

She began to make a funny face, and pose with the pillow on the bed. McKenna would have to guess where her mom was, and if she looked closely, it would not be tough to determine.

A Quick Selfie

Deanna took a quick snap of herself lying on McKenna’s pillow with the message, “Guess where I am.” To her horror, McKenna responded right away and said that she was in the wrong room. Deanna had unknowingly gotten into an unknown student’s bed for a nap and started snapping pictures.

It was a pretty embarrassing moment, and Deanna knew she would need to get out of there as quickly as possible. She just hoped the student wasn’t on their way back.

Breaking In

McKenna became increasingly worried when she realized what had happened. Her mom, while trying to be nice, had actually just broken into someone’s room and almost had a nap. She knew that she was probably a bit lost, but she definitely needed to get out of there.

She tried to guide her mom to her actual room, to avoid any more mixups. It was a pretty funny situation, and Deanna’s arrival was not a secret anymore.

Feeling Embarrassed

It was a pretty embarrassing moment for Deanna, which you can see in the texts that she and McKenna exchanged. Jumping out of bed, she dashed towards the exit. Luckily, the girls in the other room had just assumed she was this unknown student’s mom.

Hopefully, they wouldn’t say anything to the student about the strange woman who entered her place, and almost had a nap in her bed. Where was McKenna now?

Laughs All Around

The moment was hilarious for both McKenna and Deanna after they got over the initial shock of her ending up in the wrong dorm. Once they found each other, they burst into laughter. Finally, the two were reunited and could catch up on everything.

Both Deanna and McKenna were thrilled to see one another, and Deanna finally got her mother-daughter bonding moment. It was a pretty easy mix-up for Deanna to make, a lot of the dorms looked the same.

A Story To Share

Deanna and McKenna decided to share their story on social media, and the rest of the world thought it was hilarious. The word is still out on whose dorm room Deanna ended up in, but we’re sure the mystery student would not mind.

The only way she would know it was her room, is by the pillow. We hope that Deanna and McKenna continue to make each other laugh with these silly pranks. Maybe next year Deanna will get the right room!
