A Thai Escape With A Twist: Koh Lanta

Southern Thailand is known for its multitude of islands, some busier than others but Koh Lanta, in particular, has an organization that is designed for a different experience. Time For Lime is one of the best restaurants on the island and the owner, Junie Kovacs decided to start the Lanta Animal Welfare non-profit organization as a direct response to all of the animals she saw in need of help on the island. These organizations have a symbiotic relationship that allows travelers to combine their love of food with that of animal welfare.

The Culinary Experience
Time for Lime offers a cooking school as well as nine bungalows for travelers to stay at. At the school, you can learn how to prepare an ever-changing menu of Thai delicacies and fun cocktails. A large portion of the proceeds from this and the restaurant itself actually goes towards the animal programs. There is also a vegan menu so you can learn to make things like mango sticky rice and massaman curry. The Lanta Animal Welfare organization does have some dogs and cats staying in the area while they get ready to find their forever homes so only stay here if you adore animals.

Volunteering With Lanta Animal Welfare
If you are looking for a working holiday then this is an excellent way to do it. You can be a volunteer who simply cares for the animals on a daily basis, a host who greets those coming to the shelter, a vet who provides much-needed care, or a flight volunteer where you take a pet to their forever home if they are adopted abroad. While the volunteering is not free and requires a commitment of 1 to 3 months it is an incredibly worthwhile experience and a great way to see the island. Room and board is included, and that means meals from the delicious Time For Lime menu and time to really explore the island of Koh Lanta through the eyes of locals.
